What to do while you wait

Rinse gently with warm water and floss to remove trapped food. Use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling — never place aspirin directly on gums or teeth. If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), keep it moist in milk and reach a dentist immediately, ideally within one hour.

What counts as a dental emergency?: Severe or worsening tooth pain, swelling in the gums or face, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, bleeding that won't stop, or an injury to your mouth. For severe facial swelling or difficulty breathing, go to an emergency room first.
What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?: Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it briefly if dirty — don't scrub — and keep it moist in milk or gently against your cheek. Getting to the dentist within an hour offers the best chance of saving it.
